ELSU CAN DO

Sure looks like ELSU can really DO…. The best pacer down under these days is a horse named ELSU whose currently dominating the Inter Dominions in Auckland…. Elsu is a Falcon Seelster like our own McArdle…

Never thought about it but do they refer to us as “Up Over” in that part of the world.

Continue to hear how those who have McArdle foals really like them…. And with good reason as he’s about as handsome a horse as you’re gonna see…

Don’t know if he’s a budding Mohammed Mali (Malabar Man-RUBY CROWN) just yet, but am starting to notice MALTESE MALCOM (Malabar Man-HIGH NOON TEA) at the Meadowlands. Malcolm just won again in 1:56.3 on a night when the other trotters went in 58 and change… This year we’ll be offering AFTERNOONER a sister to Maltese Malcom by Dream Vacation whose first crop is generating rather rave reviews thus far.

The sire Malabar Man may be at Winbak these days but we’ve got a nice filly named MALBORO MARE (Enbeecee) to sell this fall… She’s got some family too being out of a daughter of the well remembered Powerful Victory 3,1:57.3 $207,648… The next dam is Katie Almahurst dam of Feeling Great she responsible for Self Possessed.

YES there will be a MALBORO MAN next year and NO we ain’t run out of Matt names yet…

Our own Ruby Crown most famous for sons Scarlet Knight (Pine Chip) and Mohammed Mali (Malabar Man will offer a three quarter brother to Scarlet Knight named Redneck Lavec by the resurgent Enjoy Lavec

Must have Georgia on my mind again… Heard that one of our favorite alumni Georgia Pacific (Western Hanover-ARMBRO SAVANNAH) is set to qualify sometime next week…

Ditto ISLE OF PATMOS (Astreos-Banska Belle) who we did NOT breed yet gets our attention due to recently acquired broodmare prospect BELLYS UP a sister to Swinging Away p,3,1:50.4, Dave Aint Here p,2,1:52.1 and Isle Of Patmos’ mother Banska Bella p,2, 1:55.4 This year Bellys Up (herself a winner of $323,320) is booked to Western Hanover and next year she’ll see Cams Card Shark…

Richest pacer of the year at this writing is Stonebridge Kisses at $120,675 and she’s further testimony to her sire ARTISCAPE… Yes George Teague Vesta Blue Chip dam of we ALL know who has been booked back to Artiscape this year…

Speaking of Dream Vacation, he’ll showcase My Star Trecker a three quarter sister to My Starchip 3,1:54.2 $376,089 the Pine Chip lass who beat the boys in the Zweig some years back.. The next dam is the very gifted My Starlet. (156.3. $340,258)

THANKS HOLLY.

Courtesy of colleague “Hollywood” Heyden , got to relive some magic moments via DOM REBELO and his internet video archives… No Freddy Goldstein.… Nothing on Sir Charles Pick… but we did see Overtrick, Meadow Skipper, Adoras Dream, Cold Front,. Henry T Adios, Handle With Care, Smashing Don, Tarport Hap and Silk Stockings in various Roosevelt and Yonkers classics…. Wonderful stuff…

From time to time we will be utilizing this space as forum to address events that impact the harness world in general and not just the farm… Basically we’re all components of this industry and in order for it to work properly all cylinders must operate efficiently…

Liked the South Florida Sunshine Sale and can see some future there.. Hopefully a little date synchronization can be arranged with Pompano to create a super weekend encompassing a strong Isle Of Capri card Saturday night and the sale on Sunday…

Kinda like it used to work with Hambletonian Saturday and Lana Lobell Sunday…

Don’t know about you but the lure of South Florida in late January is always enticing…

AMAZING ADIOS

Ya may have noticed Tommy White’s Little Brown Jug poll in which he divided the placements into 10 year segments soliciting favorite races and horses from each segment..
In the span between 1956 and 1965, at least one offspring of Adios finished in the money in eight of those years.. And get this… In seven of those years, a son of Adios was The Little Brown Jug winner…. And that is stallion domination…

Furthermore in the 1961 Cane Pace available on one of Dom Rebelo’s Internet feeds, I heard Marty Glickman call Cold Front, Henry T Adios Adios Don, Adiosand, Lang Hanover and Hogan Hanover and possibly even Cape Horn all of whom were by Adios. According to USTA statistics Adios was credited with 31 foals in 1958 of which 30 made the races and seven or maybe even eight appeared in a Triple Crown event….

John Pawlak did a great thing in his First Over Column on the USTA website reprinting thoughts and reflections of Pres Jenuine who used to run Western Harness Racing at Hollywood Park back when there was such a thing…

In many ways it reads like a primer of what not to do unless of course the intent was to have things evolve as they unfortunately have. Sadly Nostradamus couldn’t have been any more prophetic than Pres Jenuine turned out to be..

There’s also a segment detailing how “The Public Wants a Touch Of Glamour” which was right on the money. And we can take that one step further. They also want a touch of spectacle which they could get if all the factions could get together and finally allow the Breeders Crown to emulate The Breeders Cup. Which is a spectacle.. .

Really why not EIGHT races on one star studded night strategically timed to diminish the weather factor with four races devoted to 2-year olds subdivided by gait and sex and the OTHER FOUR for 3 year olds and UP. Utilizing the thoroughbred weight for age premise 3-year-olds would automatically draw for the inside post positions..

Purses should be at least $1 million for 2-year-olds and more for the 3’s and ups.

When you think about it there really was no more stature to gain with Windsongs Legacy beating the same colts… Again…. Just like there was no additional stature gain for Rainbow Blue beating the same fillies… Again… But Rainbow Blue against Eternal Camnation and Bunny Lake would have been SPECTACLE… Just as Windsong and Cantab taking a shot at the older trotters…

Actually there’s ample precedence for this as it used to happen in the American Classics at Hollywood. Shadow Wave was three when he won.. So was True Duane when he nailed Bret and Cardigan with divisional leader Romeo Hanover absent. As recently as 1976, Oil Burner then 3 beat Rambling Willie in a Classic in what may have been the last year of those things.

Ya want FANS, give ‘em SOMETHING to watch…

No Jeff Langfelder I didn’t forget about “brush artist” Lucky C who was a Lucky Eden half brother to a long time New York mainstay named Lou John.. That one was by Elliot Hanover.. Couldn’t possibly remember if all the phone messages from yesterday got returned but Lou John is somehow imbedded in memory.. Even if he never got out of C1 in an undistinguished career. Right Myron???

FIVE ONTARIO ELIGIBLES

Got FIVE Ontario eligibles to sell later this year… Two Camlucks including CAMIFICATIONS (Ever And Again) the first Camluck ever brother to free-for-aller and sire Dragon Again.. Also CAM THE TORPEDOS (Armbro Terrace) from a $320,000 winning daughter of Bruces Lady..

There’s MACH N ROLL (Makin Bucks) a Mach Three from first foal from a sister to 1:49.3 pacer New Bucks…

And a pair of Aces N Sevens.. One IN GOOD HANDS (Angel Be Good) is a half brother to Brandons Cowboy p,3,1:50.3 and Odds On Charmaine p,4,1:51.2. Also FOR SEVEN SCORES the first foal of Forever For Life, she from a sister to Ball And Chain and Loving Success.

See ya next week

Bob Marks
